Tom McCutcheon is a Senior Fellow at the UK Defence Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl). His interests have evolved from the more formal end of data science to a more interdisciplinary approach with an emphasis on complexity and the interactions between humans and data. He is the UK Dstl Independent Technical Authority on Autonomy and in that role has created / shaped a number of research partnerships both national and international. These include the Defence and Security partnership with the Alan Turing Institute, engagements with Newcastle and Oxford universities, composite partnerships through the UK research Councils, overseas links with the "5 Eyes" anglophone community and the EU Horizon 2020.
He was appointed panel member at the 2014 Research Excellence framework, has a visiting professorship at Newcastle University and carries out consultancy for wider UK government and academia.
In his spare time, Tom enjoys cycling, walking, photography and theatre. He also enjoys sport flying in his Gyrocopter.
